A young graduate engineer from Romford has received a top industry award in recognition of his outstanding success in the early stages of his career.

Hamza Din, who is studying for a BEng Civil Engineering at Brunel University, undertook an industrial placement at Ipswich-based Jackson Civil Engineering as part of his degree course and made such a positive impact that he won the Most Promising New Entrant Trainee Civil Engineer award at the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (Southern) training awards.

Hamza received the accolade for his achievements as an engineer’s assistant on the company’s M25 schemes, during which time he demonstrated competences associated with a full site engineer. He possesses good leadership qualities and exceptional engineering skills – and also became an ambassador for Jacksons for STEM projects across the M25, visiting schools, colleges and universities to promote civil engineering as a career.

Said Hamza: “I am very proud to have won this award. At school, I wasn’t among the very highest achievers, but I found a passion for civil engineering. During my placement year, I worked on some great projects with some incredible people, and I would certainly urge other young people to look at the fantastic opportunities that this industry has to offer.”

David Allen, CECA (Southern) Executive Director, said that the success of Hamza and the other winners highlighted the importance of attracting people to the industry from a diverse range of backgrounds, whether from school, college or other business sectors.

Said David: “It is inspirational to see our next generation of civil engineers, such as Hamza, making such a difference even in the early stages in their careers.  As an industry, we need motivated people from every part of society to help us deliver the infrastructure projects that are vital to the UK’s future prosperity.”

The CECA (Southern) Training Awards are presented annually to trainee civil engineers, apprentices and lifetime achievers in recognition of exceptional performance and dedication. Hamza received a trophy and cheque for £500 from Brian Crofton, Chairman of CECA (Southern), at the ceremony held at The Brewery in London.
