Residents Get a Say in New Street Names for My North Town

2nd December 2010

First Wessex has invited all residents living in the My North Town redevelopment area to one of three consultation drop- in events so that they can select an overall theme for the new street names for the regenerated area. In a survey sent out in the last newsletter, residents  were asked specifically if they wished to retain Pegasus Avenue, Denmark Street and Denmark Square as road names within the new development. Residents will return their surveys or complete their surveys at the forthcoming events.

All of the drop in events will be held at the North Town Base on

Tuesday 7 December 5pm to 8pm

Friday 10 December 9am to 12noon

Saturday 11 December 10am to 1pm

Residents have been asked to select their top three favourite themes from a choice of nine or put forward their own suggestion for a theme. After the most popular theme has been selected for the new estate, individual street names and court names will be put forward for review; all related to the overall theme.

The themes are as follows:

Historical Farming

Historical Famous People

Historical Local Landmarks

Animals

Flowers

Constellations

Rivers

Colours

Herbs and Spices

People will also be able to view an exhibition of North Town’s past history with photographs dating back to 1891 – residents have provided First Wessex with their own memories of living on the estate.

Jim White, from the Aldershot Historical and Archaeological Society has helped the housing association with the research. He says:

“It has been a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the area’s past. It has brought back many happy memories of the old companies and pubs that used to flourish here in the last century. North Town is still a vibrant area that has much to offer. I am proud of the community who live here and look forward to the new housing development bringing new blood to the area.”

Residents will also meet the contractor, Leadbitter’s Community Engagement Manager Jeanette Hawrot who will lead on the company’s initiatives to offer apprenticeships and other benefits to the local community.

People can  view a virtual tour of the regenerated estate on My North Town website: www.mynorthtown.net.    The My North Town Enquiry Line 0800 358 0459 is still available for interested residents to call for any further information.”
