The Perfect Picture for DIY Framing...

In just under eight months DIY Framing has seen a 23% increase in turnover, invested in new machinery, recruited two new members of staff and moved premises - a positive example of a small manufacturer continuing to grow amidst a still uncertain economic future.
Duncan McDonald, Managing Director of bespoke picture frame manufacturer DIY Framing, based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, had a vision - to expand the business and increase efficiency throughout the whole business, paying particular attention to existing manufacturing operations.
Following a referral, Duncan contacted the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) South East for hands-on support in order to turn his vision into a reality at his new site in High Wycombe. In stepped Specialist Roger Dyer.
Working closely across a three-day period and following a process mapping review of current DIY Framing operations, Roger advised Duncan to invest in better quality machinery, move production downstairs and re-structure the layout in order to achieve big efficiency gains, including a dramatic reduction in the amount of wasted time workers spend travelling across the shopfloor unnecessarily.
Following the restructuring DIY Framing achieved a 23% increase in turnover, equating to £400K, recruited two new employees, purchased new machinery that has enabled products to be developed more efficiently and effectively, staff time is now used more productively and the available upstairs space is now used for much-needed storage.
Duncan said: “I am delighted with the support provided by MAS South East, Roger’s help with the new factory floor has been invaluable – the new layout allows daily operations to flow better and we’ve now removed all unnecessary waste from the production line .We are now looking onwards and upwards.”
Roger also assisted DIY Framing in gaining a PhD student for one year, to concentrate on marketing activities and web design, through the Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) scheme, Europe's leading programme helping businesses to improve their competitiveness and productivity.
Duncan is now looking to open up another shop dedicated to teaching people how to design and make frames.
