H+H Green Shoots go from Strength to Strength
5th October 2010
H+H UK Limited was named winner of the 2010 award for Kent Environment Business of the Year, improving on its 2009 position of Resource Efficiency winner.
Based in Sevenoaks, Kent, H+H, a manufacturer of environmentally friendly aircrete blocks, is leading the way for sustainability within the construction industry and understands just how important it is to be ‘green’ in today’s competitive climate.
With three Sunday Times Green Awards under their belt, rising from 29th to 9th position at this year’s ceremony and making them the highest placed UK precast concrete company,H+H continues to works hard at reducing its energy consumption, ensuring that everything is done to minimise its environmental impact; in 2008 they were awarded certification to the Carbon Trust Standard for their efforts to cut carbon emissions – a UK first within the construction industry.
As part of their efforts, the company has also worked with the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) South East for a number of years on their journey to becoming lean and green, for example as a member of the MAS South East Resource Efficiency Club – an initiative in Kent bringing together local manufacturers that want to go ‘leaner and greener’, encouraging environmental best practice.
Dr Colin Cook, Chief Scientist at H+H, said: “Working with MAS South East has been invaluable towards our on-going long-term green commitments. The MAS South East Resource Efficiency Club has provided us with a wealth of sustainable recommendations to implement into our existing operations, many of which we have acted upon following informative presentations on Water and Energy Management, Carbon Reduction and Waste Minimisation.”
Dr Cook continued: “There is growing Corporate Social Responsibility pressure for all companies to go ‘green’. As a manufacturer of aircrete blocks to the domestic building industry, it is vital that we are a ‘green’ supplier and achieve and maintain certain standards – this includes the company’s ISO 14001 environmental management system, the BES 6001-2008 Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products and the continued involvement with MAS South East.”
Looking for a host company to launch its Environmental Best Practice Programme, MAS South East looked no further than H+H, recognising its green credentials and industry reputation as a manufacturer leading the way towards a greener future.
Ian Pateman, MAS South East Specialist, said: “H+H is at the forefront of the low carbon challenge facing all manufacturers, actively embracing the inevitable shift towards a low carbon economy. It is important that the manufacturing community is equipped with the capabilities and skills to take advantage of the potential benefits as the world moves towards a low carbon future and MAS South East is ready to support those companies to take advantage of job creation and growth.”
H+H is currently in the process of developing a BS EN 16001 energy management system, which very few companies in the UK have gone through, and have also agreed to have their energy usage validated by BSI (British Standards Institute) using its new BSI Kitemark ERV scheme (Energy Reduction Validation Scheme) which was recently approved by the Environment Agency as an early action metric for the CRC (Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency) scheme.
