EMS Triumph at Best Factory Awards
7th October 2010EMS Radio Fire and Security Systems Ltd, manufacturers of wireless fire detection and security systems based in Herne, Kent, scooped two of the top awards at this year's Best Factory Awards* winning Best Small/Medium Enterprise and receiving a highly commended in the Best Electronics and Electrical Plant category.
Upon learning they had made the first cut during the awards process, EMS asked the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) South East to carry out a full Lean audit to ensure the company’s factory floor organisation was in the best possible shape for the judging process.
As a member of the MAS South East Kent Best Practice Club and having sent a number of its staff on MAS South East Lean Facilitator courses, EMS were more than happy to receive additional, hands-on support from Specialists Ian Pateman and Rachel Doyle.
Ian and Rachel spent one day on site carrying out a standard Lean audit, evaluating processes, procedures and productivity levels, and looking to see how and where efficiencies and improvements could be made and implemented.
EMS’ Manufacturing Director Chris Mulvihill said: “Having worked hard to improve our manufacturing performance, we are both proud and delighted with our Best Factory Award achievements. Working with MAS South East has enabled us to focus our continuous improvement programme, and the audit allowed us to implement actions that further improve our on-time delivery, the overall quality of our products, and the quality of communication within the factory”.
“As a direct result of the audit, we implemented a series of monitor screens into each work area that draw real time data from our ERP system. These screens communicate the schedule adherence and quality performance of the work area, allowing us to easily observe and control what is happening around the factory floor in real time. This now allows us target and pin-point issues for immediate attention and action.”
Chris continued: “The MAS South East Kent Best Practice Club is a great platform for focusing improvements and developing best practice tools and techniques – the environment in which the clubs are delivered is perfect for putting those tools and techniques into context, seeing how other manufacturers, regardless of industry sector, are ‘doing it’.”
*The Best Factory Awards have, for almost 20 years, been part of a unique programme open to UK based manufacturing enterprises to inspire a commitment to developing World Class performance in all areas of operations.
