Plans for a new-style University Technical College in Plymouth focused on engineering and advanced manufacturing have been welcomed by EEF, the organisation representing manufacturers across the south west.

Paul Knight, EEF’s south west Region Director, says that the initiative will not only provide vital skills to local manufacturers it will also help to change the perception of manufacturing among young people.

“There is strong commitment from government to rebalance the economy but this relies upon creating a pipeline of skilled and motivated young people,” says Paul Knight.

“The new UTC proposed for Plymouth creates a great opportunity to inspire a new generation of engineers and designers who can be equipped with the skills needed to embark on high-level apprenticeships or to enter higher education.

“I am also pleased that emphasis is to be given to meeting the needs of local of employers in sectors such as marine engineering – skill shortages have long been an issue for EEF members and this is a very positive step in addressing these concerns.”

Mr Knight said he hoped the college would also help change perception among young people about a career in industry.

“Too many students have an out-dated view of working in manufacturing – hopefully the UCT will help dispel these myths and show that industry can offer exciting and rewarding careers.”
