Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK) Limited has been named runner-up in the Innovative Operating Practices Award category of the national EEF Future Manufacturing Awards 2011

Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK) Limited has been named runner-up in the Innovative Operating Practices Award category of the national EEF Future Manufacturing Awards 2011 in a prestigious awards ceremony in London.

The success of the Melksham-based company, which manufactures railway equipment, including the supply of railway braking equipment and aftermarket support, confirms its position as one of the top performing manufacturers in the country.

The annual awards are hosted by EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, and recognise excellence in enterprise, innovation, environmental performance and skills development among UK manufacturers.

Knorr-Bremse gained success in the Innovative Operating Practices Awards category sponsored by JAM Recruitment, for the way in which it had formulated and realised a new process by taking a radical and different approach to a product cell facility that is clean, efficient and delivers an increased level of output as well as improved quality. The company had clearly seen opportunities for investment in manufacturing in both the UK and overseas markets.  The judges were also impressed by the fact that the company had seen a return on investment within 10 months.

Paul Goodhand, Managing Director of Knorr-Bremse Rail Systems (UK) Limited commenting on the success said, “We were delighted to be the winners of the South West Regional Award at the end of last year and to come runner up in the national Future Manufacturing Awards against a host of strong competition from across the UK is fantastic and a true recognition that the operational changes and efficiencies that we have put in place are of the highest standard.”

Paul Knight, South West Region Director for EEF, added: “Congratulations to Knorr-Bremse on their success at the National Finals. They have demonstrated how innovative ways to increase operational efficiency can have an impact on the profitability of the company. The company is a shining example to all 11,500 manufacturers in the South West, who together contribute £12.5billion to the UK economy. “

John Morris, Chief Executive of JAM Recruitment, also commented: “These awards are testimony to just how much talent and tenacity there is in the UK’s manufacturing sector and help to showcase the many reasons why UK manufacturing is famous the world over. The market is tough, but our manufacturers are maintaining their competitive edge, and the sector is widely recognised as our nation’s great economic hope for the coming years – something that is certainly worth celebrating.”

Knorr-Bremse reached the national final, held at a glittering Gala Dinner at Plaisterers’ Hall , Old London Wall, by winning its category in the EEF South West regional competition.
